Unit 1 - Digital Graphics

Practice Task Brief

(Note the work that you complete for the practice task will be very similar to the work you complete for the real assessment task, everything you do counts, do the very best job you can)

As senior members of a Digital Photography Club and the most experienced users of Digital Imaging Software you have been asked to produce a mini guide for others on Photography, Digital Graphics and Obtaining and Editing Images.

You will be creating the guide for distribution to new members when they join. The content that you will be required to create will be a simple guide and may split naturally into two sections/chapters but ultimately the design and layout of the guide is completely up to you. You could provide a digital solution or a printed guide.

Part 1 – Digital Cameras – taking and saving digital images to include rules of photography
Part 2 – Basic image editing and software features

Part 1
Your particular job is to demonstrate to new users the concepts by means of edited version of images you obtain and some small amount of narrative by way of explanation. To include what a digital camera is, setting up the camera, components of the camera, taking creative photographs hints, etc, transferring to a computer, file formats with explanations for use.

Part 2
Use a range of editing techniques, and explain briefly within the guide. Editing the photographs that you have taken alongside the explanations, to ensure they are suitable for the purpose you have identified within the guide. Edited and original versions of the images may appear in your guide along with a brief narrative as to how the editing is carried out within the chosen software application. Keep clearly labelled copies of the original and edited versions of the images in the selected formats.

You need to:
Task 1:

a) Explain what a digital camera is, its features and facilities
b) Explain different file formats, how they are used and why
c) Take a series of photographs using a digital camera
d) Include examples of frames or composed photographs to demonstrate the basic rules of photography
e) Transfer the images to the computer using file names and locations and details of the process for users
f) Identify and briefly explain why you used the particular format

TASK 2: Carry out basic editing on the photographs you have taken and transferred to your computer
a) Locate and launch an image manipulation program
b) Open your photographs using the software application
c) Using the tools and features of the interface and workspace, edit the photographs you have taken – this editing could include - resizing, cropping, scaling, altering brightness, colour balance, etc

TASK 3: Edit the photographs accordingly to suit the purpose
a) Create a plan to ensure that you and your friends achieve your identified objective and are not distracted by other areas.
b) Review the plan regularly to ensure you are still on track.
c) Locate and launch an appropriate software application.
d) Open your photographs within the application and use the tools and features to demonstrate the functionality to users.

TASK 4: Review the editing
When you have completed the guide, review your work against the original plan to ensure that all the objectives have been achieved, how appropriate the guide is for new users and any areas where you could have improved.

This is NOT aimed to be a complete software training manual.

You are free to work on these tasks at home and ask any questions via the Blog.

The Modules...

After much debate, several recounts and the odd riot you the students have decided what modules we will be taking over the coming year:

Unit 1 - Digital Graphics - Compulsory Unit - This unit is designed to provide candidates with an understanding of the types and uses of digital graphics. Candidates will explore the equipment and settings required to take photographs and source digital images. They will be able to develop competencies in using digital image manipulation software to edit digital images to a particular specification and will be able to save these in different formats for different purposes.

Unit 2 - Web Authoring - This unit is designed to accredit an understanding of the capabilities of web authoring and the skills involved in building a website. Candidates will develop an understanding of the requirements and capabilities of web authoring and the necessary resources. They will be able to use appropriate software to create, add content, test, publish and review a website.

Unit 3 - Digital Animation - This unit is designed to accredit understanding of animation techniques and skills in the creation of digital animation. Candidates will firstly develop an understanding of what a basic animation is and how it is produced. They will then explore what digital animation is and where, when and why it is used. They will be able to use a digital animation program to create and test a simple animation that is suitable for integration into digital pages. They will be able to export the animation files in the correct format.

Unit 6 - Digital Video - This unit is designed to accredit an understanding and develop skills required in preparing for and recording digital video. Candidates will investigate the technology currently used in the video industry. Candidates will develop competencies in using a digital video camera to capture footage. They will be able to use basic editing tools and features of appropriate software to store, edit, produce and test the final cut of a video sequence in appropriate format.

Unit 7 - 2D Game Engines - This unit is designed to accredit basic competencies in using a 2D game engine to create a 2D game from a design brief, demonstrating the effective use of game elements such as sprites, objects, events and actions. Candidates should also be competent in adding background sound and associating sound effects to actions. They will be able to test a game to ensure all the elements are functioning properly and save/export in a playable format.

Each unit will last about 7 weeks. All coursework will be completed in lessons. You have plenty of time if you use it wisely. If you fail any units you still get a certificate for the units you pass. If you want to attempt other units after completing those above you can.

We should finish this course in 1 year. Students can then opt to take the Level 3 course which is worth UCAS points towards University entry.

The course begins... Initial thoughts:

A selection of first impressions:

Luke: I think it will be so good I might have to do a back flip off a plane and land on a giant pillow...

Karl: I want to have fun. I think better when drawing or being creative and I want to make my animations, comics and anime better that's why I'm here...

Steven: I can't wait to start this course because it has got all the work that I like. When I am older I want to work for a big game company like Capcom or Sony...

Michael: Oh we didn't die today, some stuff about a black hole; the bloody Swiss are making a miniature universe...

Nicole: I like the fact that the whole course is made up of coursework, plus as I'm the only girl here I'm convinced that I can convince Mr Miles to give me chocolate and stuff because there's too much testosterone in the room...

All win a doughnut!
